Delivery partners

Republic of Fiji Government

We’re partnering with the Republic of Fiji Government to protect Nadi town from future flooding events.

The project includes assessments of watershed conditions in the upper Nadi catchment to assist the development of flood models, which can inform land management practices and assist with disaster preparedness and management.

Republic of Fiji Government’s top major infrastructure priority

The support will also assist the Republic of Fiji Government with the development or strengthening of watershed management legislation.

Flooding in Nadi town and on the Nadi flood plain is a significant issue, with weather events becoming more frequent and severe across the Pacific. There have been 26 major floods in the Nadi catchment since 1991, with severe floods in January 2009 claiming 11 lives, leaving 12,000 people homeless and resulting in FJD113 million worth of damage.

The project is one of the major infrastructure priorities of the Republic of Fiji Government. It complements work under design by the Government of Japan.

Our financing package consists of an AUD5 million grant to the Republic of Fiji Government.

Impact

Across all its projects, the AIFFP prioritises lasting development and economic outcomes for people and communities. Its approach is guided by five impact areas: local content; climate resilience; social and environmental safeguards; gender equality, disability and social inclusion; and quality and integrity. The project aims to support the Republic of Fiji Government to develop flood models to support disaster risk reduction activities that will protect Nadi from major floods.

As one of Fiji’s major population centres, Nadi has particular economic significance as the gateway to Fiji, home to Fiji’s main international airport and several large resorts. Tourism is important to Fiji, contributing about 40% of GDP. In 2023, Fiji hosted 929,000 travellers and surpassed pre-pandemic levels by 4%. Flood mitigation work in Nadi is essential to protecting Fiji’s economy as well as the livelihoods of its communities, with a population of more than 59,000
