[DEMO] The country’s first large-scale renewable energy project, helping to make electricity affordable to all Solomon Islanders.

The Solomon Islands, a country of 70 plus languages and dialects, is made up of 997 islands and atolls scattered over 1.34 million square kms of ocean.

Enabling prosperity across the Pacific.

It is one of the most geographically isolated countries in the world, with more than 80% of the population living in rural areas. Only 9% of Solomon Islanders are connected to the power grid, making it one of the world’s least connected countries. It is also burdened with some of the highest electricity costs in the world due to its near 100% dependence on expensive imported diesel for electricity.

We're fortunate to have the AIFFP enable
the last, critical piece of this project that will change the lives of thousands.

The AIFFP is financing the project’s transmission line, the last piece of infrastructure required to make the Tina River Hydropower Project viable.

It includes 22km of transmission works connecting the Tina River Hydropower station to the main electricity distribution point in the capital, Honiara. This will allow electricity generated to be distributed through the main grid, and on to end users in Honiara, creating more affordable electricity by the end of 2023.

The Tina River Hydropower Project is expected to generate between 70 and 80 gigawatt hours annually, which represents more than 70% of Honiara’s annual demand. Electricity consumption in the Solomon Islands is prohibitively costly - at around 25-33% of average annual household income. Compare that with Australia's -0.4% of average annual household income.

The multimillion dollar loan provided by the AIFFP turns this transformative piece of infrastructure into a reality.

Reductions in the price of electricity will result in a range of benefits across the economy — as well as for households — including for small business and productive enterprise, and by increasing government capacity to provide critical services. The Tina River Hydropower Project was originally considered by the World Bank in 2006. The multimillion dollar loan provided by the AIFFP turns this transformative piece of infrastructure into a reality.

A bold, life-changing project, made possible by bilateral and international cooperation. Australia continues to work hand-in-hand with our Pacific partners to identify projects that support sustainable and long lasting economic growth.
